Why can't I just sign up?
Because every account here is attached to a real person, and someone already inside put their name to it. That doesn't make bad actors impossible. It makes them traceable, and it makes them expensive. In a community where being outed can cost you a job, a family, or a visa, accounts that cost nothing to make are the problem.
We know what that trades away, and who it shuts out. So we're building ways in that don't depend on who you already know: showing up in person is one, and people here being open to vouching for someone they've met is another. Nobody is locked out for good.
